Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi believes the left-handed combination of Sharjeel Khan and Fakhar Zaman should start the innings for the Men in Green in T20 cricket. However, Afridi believes that Sharjeel and Fakhar have enough potential to excel Pakistan in the powerplay. Sharjeel has had frightening form in the National T20 Cup, amassing 339 runs for Sindh including one hundred and a half-century, but he’s not in Pakistan’s team for the T20 World Cup 2021.
Zaman was a member of the travelling backup for the competition in the United Arab Emirates. However, he got it into the 15-man team, shifting places with Khushdil Shah.
“Everyone has their opinion but I think that Fakhar Zaman and Sharjeel Khan should be Pakistan’s openers in T20 cricket. Even if one of them clicks, we will win the game inside the first six overs,” said Afridi.
Azam Khan doesn’t have the required form and fitness: Afridi
Afridi, who was last featured in international cricket in 2018, believes Fakhar, who is now serving Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the National T20 Cup, is not prepared to bat in the middle order.
“I’m not happy with Fakhar Zaman’s batting position. I don’t know who has told him to bat at number five or six because he has played as an opener throughout his career. Our team needs an opener like him who can score as many runs as possible in the first six overs,” he stated.
Aside from bringing in Fakhar, Pakistan made 2 additional modifications to their World Cup lineup. They picked Haider Ali and Sarfaraz Ahmed instead of Azam Khan and Mohammad Hasnain.
Afridi was emphatic in his opinion of Khan has to improve his performance and fitness in order to be a long-time member of the Pakistan national team.
“No, he [Azam Khan] should not be part of the side right now. He doesn’t have the required form and fitness. He needs to work really hard on them and especially his fitness,” Afridi added.
