Jhulan Nishit Goswami was born on November 25, 1982, in Chakdaha of West Bengal. She is a right-arm medium-fast bowler. Presently, she is serving as the lead pace bowler in the Indian team. Jhulan has been spearheading India’s women’s bowling attack for more than 17 years and is still going very strong for the national side. She is known as one of the greatest women fast bowlers of all time. Also, she is one of the fastest bowlers in the world in the women’s cricket. After the retirement of Cathryn Fitzpatrick, Jhulan emerged as the fastest in the world. She also served as the captain of the Indian National Women’s team. She has been rewarded not just for her hard work on the field but also off the field too, she has worked tirelessly to get perfection.

Jhulan Goswami Early Life and Education

Jhulan was born and raised in a middle-class family. She started watching cricket on TV from very early age and started taking interest in it. She was deeply motivated by watching Australian batter Belinda Clark in 1997 World Cup. At the age of 15, she started playing cricket. During her early days, there were no cricket facilities in her home town Chakdaha. So, she used to travel to Kolkata to play cricket. She spent a lot of time in training in Kolkata. After her training, she got a call up to play for the state team.

Jhulan Goswami Career

In 2002, Jhulan Goswami made her International debut in an ODI against England at the age of 19. In the same month i.e., 14 January, 2002 she received her test cap and made a debut against England.

Since the beginning of her career, Jhulan impressed everyone with her skills. In 2006, she was named as Vice-captain of Indian team for the tour of England. She played a crucial role in helping India to register their first victory in England. She took her career best bowling figures of 10/78 in first test and 5/45 in the second match. She also made her maiden half century on the tour. She won Player of the Series award in that tour.

In 2007, Jhulan won the ICC Women’s Player of the year. In 2008, she was made captain of the Indian team. She took over the captaincy from Mithali Raj. In the

same year she became the fourth women to bag 100 wickets in One Day Internationals.

In 2010, she received Arjuna Award followed by Padma Shri in 2012. She became the second Women cricketer to receive Padma Shri after Diana Edulji.

In 2011, she took 6 wickets against New Zealand but India failed to win. Later in the same year she stepped down as the captain of the team to focus more on her bowling.

In May 2017, Jhulan became the leading wicket taker in the world in One Day Internationals. She surpassed Australia’s Cathryn Fitzpatrick. She was also the part of Indian squad who reached in the final of Women’s Cricket World Cup 2017.

In February 2018, Jhulan became the first Women cricketer in the world to take 200 wickets in ODI cricket. In the same year, she reached a mark of 300 wickets in International cricket in all the three formats combined.

She took retirement from T20Is in August 2018.

In November 2020, she was nominated for ICC Women’s ODI cricketer of the year award.

Recently during the Women’s World Cup 2022 in New Zealand, Jhulan Goswami reached a landmark of 250 wickets in One day internationals for India. She became the 1st Women and 7th Indian bowler to take 250 wickets for the national side.

Jhulan Goswami has taken highest number of wickets in the history of Women’s World Cup from 2005 – 2022. In 34 matches, she took 43 wickets with an economy of 3.45 and conceded just 935 runs.
