Australia and India will go head-to-head in the finals of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023. After a cycle of 2 years, it is the contest between the two best teams that will decide the ultimate winner in the game’s longest format. The final will be played at the iconic Oval Stadium in London. A neutral venue adds a lot of spice to what is already a much-anticipated clash.

We look at why this final is a deserving summit clash:

#1 History between the two sides

The rivalry between Australia and India kickstarted in this century. Earlier, Australia was a nation that many teams found hard to beat. The Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting-led Australian sides won everywhere but they found India a difficult place to tour. India’s historic series win against Australia in the 2001-02 series marked a new beginning.

The Indian team since then was looked upon to challenge the Aussie dominance. India to their credit has been successful against Australia, especially in the last 7-8 years. They have won each of the last four series between the two sides with an identical margin of 2-1. The final will be a good place to settle scores.

#2 Deserving WTC finalists

New Zealand the inaugural WTC champions had a relatively easy path into the finals. They won everything they played at home and qualified for the finals. The conditions in the WTC Final 2021 were fairly similar to their home thereby making their cause easier. Hence their crowning moment didn’t necessarily feel like they were deserving winners.

But the narrative this time around is certainly better. Australia and India are thoroughly deserving finalists who have not just dominated at home but have been very impressive on their away tours. The second champion of WTC irrespective of who wins deserves all the prizes!

#3 A Battle of Auras

Australia is surely far from being the most dominant side they once were until 2007. The retirement of legends took a toll on the side’s performance. But the Aussies have continued to battle hard. The current class might not have the aura of their predecessors but they surely have a good ring to them.

India on the other hand has arguably been the best Test side in the last decade and a half. Apart from a couple of forgettable overseas tours, India has fought admirably in away conditions. Their vice-like grip in home conditions is exceptional. A win in the WTC Final here will prove to be a wonderful culmination of their journey in the past few years.

#4 The verdict

It is quite difficult to pick an outright winner in this contest. Both the teams have played solid cricket in recent times against each other. India hold the upper hand since 2007 when it comes to knockout games against the Aussies leading 2-1. Australia will bank on its well-rounded squad in slightly helpful conditions to trump India. The Indian team will look for that extra zeal that has been missing from their arsenal in the crunch games. It will be a top battle and we can’t for the final to begin!
