Samson’s performance in the last two seasons of the Indian Premier League led to his comeback to the Indian team earlier this year for the home series, and chief selector Chetan Sharma later indicated that Samson was part of the team’s “plan of things” for the T20 World Cup in 2022.
Later, Rohit lavished praise on the India star, claiming that the management “sees a lot of potential, talent and match-winning abilities in that individual,” before stating that India would need Samson’s ability to play effective shots on the back foot in Australia for the World Cup.
Samson, however, only had a few appearances following the IPL this year before being passed over for the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup as India chose to field Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant as their two wicketkeepers.
Few changes from the fifteen who competed at the just finished Asia Cup 2022 were made, but overall it went mostly as predicted. Samson was earlier left from the squad for the Asia Cup.
He has appeared in 6 T20Is this year and has scored 179 runs at an average of 44.75. His strike rate of 158.40 also ranks among the best for India this year.
Samson recently earned a lot of support from the stadium crowds on his tours of Zimbabwe, the West Indies, and Ireland. He was recognized as one of the team’s most beloved players.
Apart from Samson, Mohammad Shami, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Deepak Chahar, and Shreyas Iyer were the notable dropouts that did not make the cut to the 15-person squad for the T20 World Cup.
