ENG Vs SL match highlights

ENG Vs SL match highlights: England confirmed their seat for the semis after registering a victory over Sri Lanka in the last Group 1 of the Super 12 phase of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday.

Chasing a target of 142, the English batters faced a bit of heat from Sri Lanka bowlers after smashing them during the powerplay. But at last won the game by 4 wickets. Courtesy Ben Stokes unbeaten knock of 42 off 36 to become the second and final team to qualify from Group 1 along with New Zealand.

Earlier, Pathum Nissanka starred with the bat for Sri Lanka as she struck a strong 67 in 45 to help his side post 141 on board in 20 overs.

Let us look into ENG Vs SL match highlights in detail.

Opting to bat, the Asian Champions started the campaign on a bang note.

After putting 15 on board in the first 2 overs, Sri Lanka took the charge on the fastest bowler in England’s line. Mark Wood, they struck two monstrous hits for sixes. They collected 17 runs in the third over.

After losing first wicket in the 4th over, they smashed 13 runs in the 5th over bowled by Sam Curran.

With 52 on board in 5 overs, Sri Lanka was all set to score big from there on. But Adil had something else in mind, in his first over he gave just two runs. In second he gave 6, four in the third over. And 4 with a wicket of dangerous Nissanka in his last over.

He ended his magical ‘limiting the Sri Lanka batters’ 4 overs while conceding just 16 with a wicket.

Sam Curran, who gave 13 runs in his first over, then gripped the batters and leaked just 14 in the next 3 while recording 1 wicket as well.

Sri Lanka was 100 for 3 in 13, but the some unstructured knocks from the middle and the lower order dented their chances to put up a big total on board.

As a result they only managed to post 141 on board in 20 overs even after completing fifty in the 5th over itself.

Nissanka scored the highest run for the team, as his 67 of 45 with the help of two fours and five sixes was the only good knock that guide the side to a respectable score.

Sri Lanka started with spinner Maheesh Theekshana and England batters also gave him the respect.

But, their bowlers didn’t restrict them for long as Jos Buttler and Alex Hales collected 70 runs from the powerplay overs.

The medium fast bowler Kasun Rajitha leaked the most runs out of all bowlers. He gave 20 runs in the 6th over. Where Hales shot a maximum and 3 fours.

Theekshana in his second over gave 4 runs, and then Hasaranga provided Sri Lanka in the next over by removing England’s skipper for 28.

The highest-wicket taker in the tournament so far. Hasaranga didn’t stop there and then removed the dangerous Alex Hales for 47.

Hales played a destructive knock of 47 before leaving the crease.

Dhananjaya de Silva then removed Harry Brook to put some pressure on the English side. After playing two steady overs, England lost another wicket in the form of Liam Livingstone.

It was not at all over for Sri Lanka, as Dhananjaya dismissed Moeen Ali in the 15th over. The relief thing for England was the well-set Ben Stokes was still there. And he alongside Sam Curran did a decent partnership of 23 runs in a crucial situation.

Curran left the crease when England still needed 13 in the final 2 overs. Then Woakes joined the Stokes at the middle and they led England to victory.

Ben Stokes match winning knock of 42 runs in 36 came at just the right time as it provides English side ticket to the semis.
