It was, on this day, 17 years ago, when the late Shane Warne registered his 600 Test Wickets in the longest format of the game.
He achieved this milestone during the third test of the Ashes 2005 game at the Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester. The spinner recorded 708 wickets in his test career and was just behind Muttiah Muralitharan.
One cannot fully describe what he did for cricket with his brilliant bowling arm, all I can say is that the late spin magician Shane Warne was unarguably the best spinner to play the game.
With Ashes, 2005 was most remembered for how England bounced back to regain the prestigious title by beating Australia by 2-1. It was Shane Warne, the lone warrior who shined the most during the series and put Australia’s name on top
AUS vs ENG 3rd Test, Ashes 2005
The 5-match series was on a 1-1 level when both teams reached Manchester to lock horns in the third test of the series. England after winning the toss opted to bat first and was looking on the road to scoring a big total.
After losing first wicket early on, Marcus Threscothick and Michael Vaughan steadied England’s ship by adding 137 for the second-wicket before Warne came in and bowled Threscothcik out to hand a much-needed break through to the Aussies.
That wicket marked as his 600th test wicket, with which he became the first bowler to achieve that milestone. The leggie picked up 4 wickets in the first innings with England posted 444 runs on board.
In reply, Australia were seen struggling to reach 444, as they lost half of their team at just 135 and to avoid follow-on they need more 111 runs. After taking charge in bowling, Warne then rescued the Australian side with his impeccable 90-run knock to help his side cross 300 mark.
England, in their second innings the declared at 280 for 6 and asked Australia to chase 423 runs.
The final innings was played for 108 overs, with England did their all to win the game, but Australian players fought till end and managed to end the game in a draw.
