Next ODI captain of Australia?
Due to Aaron Finch’s resignation as Australia’s ODI captain, the selectors must name a replacement shortly. Additionally, Warner stated that it would be an honour to be considered for the role of ODI captain, even though Australian Test skipper Pat Cummins is the current favourite.
When Australia banned Steve Smith and David Warner for a year following their convictions in the ball-tampering controversy that occurred during the Cape Town Test against South Africa four years ago, the cricket community was shocked. This affair was known as the Sandpaper case. Cricket Australia has imposed a lifetime leadership ban on Warner in addition to the 12-month suspension (CA).
David Warner in a recent statement “Unfortunately a lot of the events before 2018 were with the board. The MOU stuff and all that. There was a lot of stuff that was… things got over and above in terms of more than the Cape Town stuff. There was more to it. I think that’s where my decision, the penalty that was handed down was more of stuff that was happening before that.”
When asked about the possibility of appointing Pat Cummins, warner stated that “Obviously Pat has the Test captaincy and he will be offered the job if he wants to take it, and rightfully so. For me, I know everyone is talking about it and I’m being endorsed by a few people but it’s something for me, it’s just about making sure Cricket Australia if they’re going to have those conversations with me that they do have those conversations.”
Sharing his views on Triple M radio Australian cricketer Aaron Finch said “I think CA (Cricket Australia) I think are revisiting what that looks like. He’s someone I’ve played under a few times for Australia when he’s had the opportunity to captain, and he’s been fantastic. He’s an unbelievable tactical captain and someone who at the time the guys loved playing under.”
He further added saying “I’m not 100 percent sure of what CA’s position is on it. But would I like to see it overturned? Yes, he’s someone who, you do your time and he’s well and truly done that I think,”
