Harbhajan Reckons Shreyas Iyer To Succeed Rahane’s Spot In India’s Test Side

Legendary spin bowler Harbhajan Singh reckons Shreyas Iyer is statistically capable of replacing Ajinkya Rahane in India’s Test side. Iyer made his Test debut versus New Zealand at Green Park in Kanpur and was named Player of the Match. The right-hander struck a hundred in the first innings and a fifty in the 2nd.

Rahane, on the other side, has been struggling for form over the previous year. The experienced has struggled to find his feet after scoring a century versus Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Rahane hasn’t scored many runs in the current series against the Black Caps. As a result, Harbhajan has pushed Iyer to take Rahane’s spot in the national Test team.

“Shreyas Iyer batted brilliantly in the last game and showed his talent. And I am so happy that he made the most of the opportunity in the middle order. Meanwhile, Ajinkya Rahane is not scoring runs. Going forward, Iyer could be India’s perfect solution,” Harbhajan.

Don’t know if Rahane will be a part of the India squad for the SA series: Harbhajan

Harbhajan also noted that despite Rahane’s recent form, he may not be an obvious inclusion for India’s next tour to South Africa. He also stated that the selectors could find it difficult to overlook Iyer for the Test series against the SA.

“Don’t know if Rahane will be a part of the India squad for the South Africa series but Iyer, I feel, has made his case as a middle-order option. It will be interesting when the selection happens,” he added.

India’s South Africa series was set to begin on December 17. The tour, unfortunately, has been postponed by BCCI by 9 days. Following the introduction of the COVID-19 Omicron version, the series will now begin on December 26.

Also on tour, India will find 3 ODIs and as many  T20Is. The 4 T20Is, on the other hand, will be postponed to a later date in 2022. In the backdrop of the coronavirus outbreak, the BCCI has still yet to confirm the squads.
