Former Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer has announced his retirement from T20I cricket.
Recently, he stepped down from captaincy after ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series game against UAE. He was the captain of the side who played the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE. Coetzer played 70 games for Scotland, in which he scored 1495 runs, including 6 half-centuries.
“After considered discussions with Cricket Scotland and the head coach, the team would gain more from someone else playing in the upcoming T2035241 fixtures and the subsequent T20 World Cup. It was a pleasure to take part and lead my country in the previous World Cup and help Scotland qualify for this year. It was a real driving force for me to continue helping the team in any way that I could,” said Coetzer.
The 38-year-old Aberdeen native witnessed a dreary run during the ICC men’s T20 World Cup in 2021, where he only managed to score runs with an average of 12 and a strike rate of 102.43.
Coetzer thanked the supporters and said representing Scotland in the previous World Cups provide him immense pleasure. He also added that now he is looking to spend more time with his family.
“From a personal point of view, I am looking forward to having a bit more time to spend with my family with two young daughters while also focusing on my coaching career and having more time for that. But ultimately, it is about what is best for the direction of the team going forward,” he said.
Coetzer captained the Scotland’s team for 41 times during his career, in which he led his team to win 20 games.
The veteran will be the part of the one-off test against New Zealand scheduled to play on July 31.
