Virat Kohli was touted as the next-in-line leader no sooner he won the 2008 U-19 World Cup as captain. He soon broke into the Indian team ahead of a few strong domestic performers. It was India’s tour to Sri Lanka where Kohli made his ODI Debut. The team wasn’t at full strength and this allowed Kohli to feature in all games. He opened the innings for India in this series where they won 3-2.

There were signs of him fighting it out against the guile of the best in the business like Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan. But the street fighter in him came to the fore post the 2011 World Cup. The combative young teen of the U-19 World Cup was in full display in the Australian tour in 2011-12. Kohli and controversies have gone hand-in-hand since then.

We look back at a few of Virat Kohli Famous Controversies:

# The run-in with the Australian crowd, media, and the team

India had one of their worst tours to Australia in 2011-12. Kohli was a key member of the white-ball side but he was yet to cement his place in the Test side. He had a forgettable West Indies tour (debut Test series) in 2011 post which he was dropped for the England tour. It was a make-or-break tour for Kohli as there were other players breathing down his neck. After a poor run in the first two Tests, Kohli was on the brink of being dropped. He had a finger gate episode with the Sydney crowd too.

It seemed as if his Test career was done but Kohli came good in the third Test at Perth scoring 44 and 75. On a track where celebrated Indian cricketers failed, Kohli stood tall. He went on to score his maiden Test ton in Adelaide sparking joyous and passionate celebrations. Kohli got to the nerves of the Australian team. He became their biggest nemesis but the Australian contingent knew they were up against someone special!

# Virat’s altercation with Gautam Gambhir

It was a touching moment when Gautam Gambhir gifted his Player of the Match award to Virat Kohli in 2009. The two Delhi boys were built of the same mould. They played their cricket hard and fair. The pair combined to win India many games but their careers moved in different directions after 2013. Kohli’s fortune was on the upswing while Gambhir was out from the team. It was Kohli who incidentally replaced Gambhir as vice-captain.

During an IPL game in 2013, both these aggressive players came dangerously close to each other. Gambhir and Kohli had a heated altercation that left a sour taste as one never expected two top-quality international players to have a go at each other.

# Virat’s ill-tempered Border-Gavaskar series in 2016-17

Virat Kohli hardly scored runs in this series but he was at the centre of everything. India had lost the first Test at Pune and it was Kohli’s first defeat at home as captain. The Indian team fought hard to win the series 2-1 eventually. But the series saw unadulterated drama right throughout. Kohli took no half-measures to Steve Smith’s brain fade of asking the dressing room for a DRS review.

The Ranchi Test saw things getting bitter as Australians mocked him for a shoulder injury and Kohli retorted strongly. At the end of the series, Kohli mentioned in the presser that he had no friends from the Australian team after what transpired during this series.
