As Suryakumar Yadav was overlooked for the Australia visit last year despite being the finest batsman in the IPL 2020, many questioned if the 30-year-old would have a significant international career. However, 2021 has turned out to be a unique year for the right-hand batsman.
Suryakumar began his international debut with a blaze, hitting 89 runs in two T20Is versus England, and has since identified himself as the country’s most in-form hitter, winning the Man of the Series title in the ODIs versus Sri Lanka.

“Obviously, everyone dreams of playing for India. It has been a lot of effort, lot of grinds, lot of patience behind this,” Yadav said after the 3rd ODI against Sri Lanka.
“It has been worth the wait, and I’m really happy about it. From here on, how I build it is all in my hands. I’m really excited for the journey ahead.”
“I’ve always been batting the same way as I am now. But yes, after I came to Mumbai Indians in 2018, things started changing a bit. I got to know what my responsibility is, how do I go about my game, how can I take it one step ahead. That’s when I started practicing even more. Talked to all the players who knew me really well from the last five-six years”, he added.
I Got Good Confidence In The First Game: Suryakumar
Suryakumar got off to a fast start for both the 2nd and 3rd ODIs after completing the first with a brilliant finish with (31) but was removed at crucial times in both. In the last 2 games, the right-hander had innings of 53 and 40, respectively, and his early removal allowed the hosts to get back into the game in each.
The 30-year-old stated that he was really disappointed with his inability to convert chances and that, moving ahead, he desires to regularly complete games for the team.
“I’m disappointed about that,” Yadav said of his dismissals in the series. “The way I started in the first game, I got good confidence. In the second game, it was the perfect situation to win a game for the team. But that time too, it was not the way I play and I got out”.
“Really disappointed with that. In the third game too, there was a good opportunity today to hold one end and try and play till the end but couldn’t do it. That’s two things I’m really keeping in mind, how do I build from here? But that’s how you learn and move forward”, he concluded.
