England Best Playing 11 For ODI World Cup

England hit rock bottom with their white ball cricket in the 2015 ODI World Cup. They failed to move past the group stage as they ended up losing to Bangladesh in their final league match. The ECB then decided to overhaul the limited-overs structure. They gave captain Eoin Morgan and coach Trevor Bayliss complete freedom to pick players specific to the format. England started finding success almost immediately.

England’s white-ball transformation:

The memo sent to all the players vying for a place in the England team was to play an aggressive brand of cricket. England’s efforts in playing white-ball cricket a certain way yielded terrific results. They qualified for the semifinals of every ICC white-ball tournament since 2016. England won their maiden ODI World Cup in 2019.

Can they create history?

They became the first team to hold two ICC World Cups across formats in 2022 with the T20 World Cup win. England starts strong favourites for the upcoming edition. They have a solid chance of defending their World Cup crown. If they manage to win the tournament, it will be an unprecedented record!

What will England’s best-playing XI look like?

Top order: (1-3)

England made a bold call of dropping Jason Roy ahead of the World Cup. It was the duo of Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow that turbocharged England’s innings in the 2019 World Cup cycle. But his omission opens up a door for Harry Brook who has had a sensational start to his career. Dawid Malan has been consistent with his run-scoring methods.

It will be interesting to see who partners Bairstow at the top. They are likely to start with Bairstow-Malan combination. Joe Root will walk into the number 3 spot. He will be expected to play the role of a sheet anchor around other flamboyant batters.

Middle order: (4-7)

If England’s top order was not fearsome enough, their middle order certainly is. Ben Stokes’s return to the ODI setup has set the cat among the pigeons. He made the highest ODI score for an English batter against New Zealand just recently. Liam Livingstone will follow Stokes and captain, Jos Buttler, will walk in at number 6. Moeen Ali will play the role of a floater and will slot in at number 7.

The bowlers: (8-11)

England’s all-out aggressive approach with the bat was largely because of their immense batting depth. Depending on the pitch conditions and opposition, they can choose either or both, Sam Curran and Chris Woakes. Adil Rashid is their lone frontline spinner who can also contribute with the bat. Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson will ramp up the pace factor.

England’s predicted World Cup 2023 XI:

  1. Jonny Bairstow
  2. Dawid Malan /Harry Brook
  3. Joe Root
  4. Ben Stokes
  5. Liam Livingstone
  6. Jos Buttler
  7. Moeen Ali
  8. Sam Curran/Chris Woakes
  9. Adil Rashid
  10. Mark Wood
  11. Gus Atkinson/Reece Topley
