The list of IPL players up for the mega auctions has been finalized. More than 500 players will go under the hammer on the big day. Teams will look to build their squad around a few key players. They will be keenly training their eyes on the list of marque players in the list. Here are Marquee Players Captaincy Contenders.
Marquee Players Captaincy Contenders
A total of 10 players have been listed in the marque category. These players will be the first ones to roll in the mega auction. 3 IPL teams currently don’t have a captain. They will surely be looking at this marque list to name their captain.
We look at 3 such contenders from the marquee names:
#3 David Warner
David Warner is arguably one of the big names who has been released ahead of the auctions. He was a run-machine Warner for the Sunrisers side. Warner is a bonafide IPL legend. He has been a proven performer for SRH in all seasons barring the last one. Warner led to IPL glory almost singlehandedly in 2016. He finished with 848 runs that season, 2nd highest that season.
Apart from this, he thrice won the orange cap. There is little that Warner didn’t do with SRH and for them. But his sacking came as a big shock for the fans. The 3 teams in the fray for a captaincy candidate will have a hungry Warner in their mind.
#2 Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer is one of the more underrated IPL captains. He metamorphosed a stagnant Delhi team. Iyer was handed Delhi’s captaincy midway in 2018. The team was in shambles in just the first season of a 4-year cycle. Iyer credibly led the side and along with Ricky Ponting took Delhi to the playoffs in 2019. They went one better in 2020 when they made the finals for the first time.
But an untimely injury ahead of the 2021 season, ruled him out of the first leg of the season. DC handed Rishabh Pant the captaincy job and strangely didn’t hand it back to Iyer once he was fit for the 2nd leg. Iyer had every right to feel short-changed. He left the Delhi terrain for greener pastures.
It was thought that Iyer will captain but it proved to be false speculation. There is buzz doing the rounds that he might captain RCB or KKR. But one thing is for sure he is a certified captain willing to lead a side.
#1 Pat Cummins
Pat Cummins was recently appointed as Australia’s Test captain. He successfully led the side to a 4-0 Ashes win over England. Cummins is someone who was always revered in the team. He possesses a real cool ahead. It helps him stay in the game throughout. Many IPL teams will want a player like him in their squad. He is a handy lower-order batsman too. Cummins will be one of the frontrunners to lead a side like RCB.
