“We’ve got to stay upbeat and positive”, says Delhi Capital’s Coach Ricky Ponting

After playing steady cricket in the first half of the 2022 IPL season, the Delhi Capitals are ready to roar for the upcoming challenges. Ricky Ponting is ahead of the DC vs KKR clash. The head coach of Delhi is confident about turning the table in their favor, on this he said, “I know we’re so close to turning it all around. We’ve all got to trust, we’ve got to believe, we’ve got to stay upbeat and positive. And if we are, things will definitely change for us. “The harder we try from here, the harder it’s going to get. We’re just going to stay nice and relax and keep repeating things we’ve been doing. And then results will definitely come our way. We are too good a team for the results not to change.”

The franchise of the young and experienced mixed players hasn’t yet performed to its potential and saw many ups and downs, but the head coach thinks that these results do not show how good this team is. 2003-2007 World Cups winning captain has re-joined the team after completing his precautionary five-day room isolation after a family member had tested positive for Covid-19. “I feel pretty relieved to be back outside again, actually after another five days locked in, and obviously missing the game.”

When asked about his experience of watching the game while in quarantine, the former Australian captain said, “It was frustrating. I think I broke three or four remote controls and a few bottles of water might have got thrown into the walls and things like that (laughs). When you’re on the sidelines, being a coach and you can’t control what’s happening out in the middle, that’s hard enough, but when you’re not actually at the ground, it can get a little more frustrating.”

Ponting, who missed the last two games because of a pandemic scare in his family, joined the team ahead of a much-needed win game against two-time IPL winner Kolkata Knight Riders. The Capitals’ camp was hit by the pandemic when Tim Seifert and Mitchell Marsh and some of the other team staff tested positive. The situation in the Capitals’ den is now under control though.

“Hopefully, we throw that COVID stuff now and are on the other side. And it’s probably a really good definitive cut-off point – halftime of the season. We can reassess and readjust and get on with, hopefully, dominating the second half of this tournament.” said the head coach Ponting.

The Rishabh Pant-led side was only able to win three matches in their seven outings in the ongoing IPL and is currently standing at seventh place on the points table.
Delhi Capitals will play their next game against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium on April 28, 2022.
