Rohit Sharma is set to cross the 16000 mark: Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is aiming to emulate the great Sachin Tendulkar, former Indian captain MS Dhoni among other legendary Indian batters to cross the 16000 mark in all formats.
The right-handed batter is on roll since he was promoted as the regular opening batter for the Indian side.
Rohit Sharma, who made his debut in international cricket in June 2007 against Ireland, has been given a chance to open the innings in T20 during India versus Bangladesh ICC T20 World Cup match in 2009, while he grabbed that place on a permanent basis in early 2013.
While, in the longest format of the game, Sharma was promoted to open the innings during team India’s first World Test Championship campaign.
The current Indian skipper has so far scored 15,892 runs in all formats – from which 11,859 came as an opener. He smashed 37 centuries out of his overall 41 as an opener.
After having a dry run in the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup, the men in blue are gearing up for the upcoming 2 big events, Asia Cup and ICC T20 World Cup 2022.
Notably, Rohit was appointed as the full-time captain of team India after Virat Kohli stepped down from captaincy from the T20 format, he was later sacked from the ODI format and then he also stepped down as the captain of the test team, making Sharma the skipper of team India in all three formats.
The Indian team is currently in West Indies, where they have completed the ODI series by winning it 3-0. And now they will have to play 5-match T20 series, starting July 29.
And Rohit, who currently has scored 15,892 runs in all formats in his career has a bright chance to reach the 16000 runs milestone when he walked in to bat in the series. While fans are hoping to see him score a century in the first T20 itself and complete the feat.
The other seven Indian players, who previously have crossed the 16000 mark in all formats are, Sachin Tendulkar (34,357), Rahul Dravid (24,208), Virat Kohli (23,726), Sourav Ganguly (18,575), MS Dhoni (17,266) and Virender Sehwag (17,253).
The first T20 between India and West Indies will be played at Brain Lara stadium in Trinidad on July 29.
