Happy Birthday Balwinder Singh Sandhu!: Former Indian fast bowler Balwinder Singh Sandhu is celebrating his 66th birthday today. Sandhu was born on this day on August 3, 1966, in the financial capital of Mumbai. Sandhu played a total of eight Tests and 22 ODIs for the country between 1982 and 1984. In his short career, he made his name immortal in Indian cricket by playing some great cricket.
Balwinder Singh Sandhu was also a member of Team India which won the World Cup in 1983. He showed the way to the pavilion by bowling Gordon Greenidge, the deadliest batsman of the opposition West Indies in the final match. The ball on which Sandhu took this wicket came in fast with a lot of swings. After this wicket, the Indian bowlers had made a flurry of wickets.
Sandhu used to bowl fast at a medium pace with his right arm. At the same time, he also played many useful innings when he got a chance in the lower order. In domestic cricket, he used to play for Mumbai. He groomed himself a lot while living in the company of stalwarts like Yashwant Siddhaye, Ramakant Achrekar, and Hemu Dalvi.
In the year 1980-81, when Karsan Ghavri got a chance in the Indian team, he got a chance to participate in the home team for Mumbai. He got off to a great start while making his debut against Gujarat. He surprised everyone by taking nine wickets in his debut match itself.
Sandhu did not stop here. He also took nine wickets in the final match. In this season, he achieved a total of 25 successes at an average of 18.72. In the 1982-83 season against South Zone in the Duleep Trophy, apart from taking eight wickets, he played an important inning of 56 runs while batting at number 11. After this excellent performance, he was included in the Indian team for Test cricket against Pakistan.
Balwinder Singh Sandhu made a total of 10 successes in Test cricket for the Indian team. Apart from this, he managed to take 16 wickets in ODIs. Apart from bowling, talking about his batting performance, he scored 214 runs in Test cricket at an average of 30.6. At the same time, 51 runs came off his bat in ODIs. Sandhu has two half-centuries to his name in Test cricket.
