What went wrong for India in ODI series against Bangladesh?

After facing a defeat by a single wicket in first ODI, team India had to face another humiliating loss in the second ODI against Bangladesh in Dhaka. Let us look at What went wrong for India in ODI series against Bangladesh?

Batting first, the Tigers gave a target of 272 runs.  In response, the Indian camp could only score 266 runs after losing 9 wickets. In the end, injured captain Rohit Sharma tried unsuccessfully to win the team. Rohit scored an unbeaten 51 facing 28 balls.

India lost the series as well as losing the match. There were many reasons behind Team India’s defeat in ODI series against Bangladesh.

Mahmudullah and Mehdi Hasan’s record partnership of 148 runs

India started well in the match.  Team India had dismissed 6 players of Bangladesh on the score of 69 runs.  But after this Mehdi and Mahmudullah started wreaking havoc on the Indian bowlers.  There was a partnership of 148 runs in 165 runs between these two.  By the time the bowlers of Team India broke this partnership, it was too late.

Bangladesh scored 68 runs in last 5 overs

Team India’s bowlers looted 68 runs in the last 5 overs.  During this, Mehdi thrashed the Indian bowlers fiercely.  He scored a total of 100 runs facing 83 balls. Mehdi’s unbeaten century included 8 fours and 4 sixes.  From India, Siraj gave 14 runs in the 46th over.  Umran Malik gave 14 runs in the 47th over.  Siraj gave 10 runs in the 48th over.  Umran gave 14 runs in the 49th over.  Shardul gave 16 runs in the last over.

Team India’s opening pair and middle order failed

Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli came to open for India.  During this, Kohli got out after scoring 5 runs and Dhawan 8 runs.  After this, Washington Sundar was dismissed after scoring 11 runs.  KL Rahul walks away after scoring 14 runs.  In this way the important players of the team returned to the pavilion without any contribution. This was also a major reason for India’s defeat.

Iyer-Axar keep India in game, but no support from no.6, 7 batters

However, Indian innings was looking in control when Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel shared a 117-run stand for the fifth wicket, Shreyas Iyer, who went on to become India’s top ODI run scorer in 2022, was able to handle the threat of Bangladesh’s spinners admirably. Iyer scored 82 runs in 102 balls, but in the 35th over against Mehidy Hasan Miraz, he was out in the deep attempting to hit one into the stands.

Shreyas Iyer, who had just smacked a six against Mehidy, attempted to attack the off-spinner who had performed flawlessly on Wednesday, but it was one risk too many.

With three sixes and two boundaries after dominating the spinners, Axar Patel reached his second ODI fifty and kept the Indian pursuit on track. Axar, who was injured in the first ODI and was forced to miss it, proved he can perform well with the bat by supporting Shreyas Iyer and keeping the scorers busy quickly.

But Ebadot Hossain, a bowler who had started the day by taking Virat Kohli‘s wicket, managed to dismiss Axar in the 39th over.

Rohit remained unbeaten on 51 in just 28 and won hearts for his valiant effort. He did not take the field after injuring his finger as early as the second over of the game while fielding at slips. Rohit was taken to the hospital for scans and was seen with tape on his finger before making the decision to enter to come out to bat.

He gave it his all in the end, but the India captain and his squad paid the price for not playing their best ball and bat in the two ODIs.
