Virat Kohli all set to break Sachin’s highest run-scorer record in ICC tournaments

Virat Kohli Record: The modern-day great Virat Kohli is all set to break Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar’s highest run record as an Indian in ICC tournaments.

Kohli, who is the top run-scorer so far in the marquee event with 220 in four innings, just needed 95 more runs to edge past Sachin Tendulkar.

He has so far scored 2619 runs in all ICC events, while Sachin amassed 2724 in ICC tournaments throughout his career.

On global level he is now just behind Mahela Jayawardene (2858), Kumar Sangakkara (2876), and Chris Gayle (2942).

Virat Kohli’s performance in T20 World Cup

Kohli, who was struggling from form ahead of the T20 World Cup and was doubtful to be part of India’s squad, shut all his critics with his performance.

The right-handed batter walked back to pavilion with 3 not out tags in 4 innings so far in the T20 in World Cup. He maintained a good strike too of 144.74 in the process and also smashed three half-centuries.

Notably, he smashed his first T20 century in the recently concluded Asia Cup event.

Some days back, Kohli scripted history when he edged past Sri Lanka great Mahela Jayewardene’s record of most runs in the tournament.

The 33-year old achieved the feat in men in blue’s game against Bangladesh at the Adelaide Oval on November 2.

Before the game, Kohli was needed 16 runs to overtake Jayewardene, but as the run-machine is in form now-a-days he played an unbeaten 62-run knock and not just overtook Sri Lanka Legend but also guided India to a good total of 184 in 20 overs.

Mahela Jayewardene’s record

Jayewardene amassed 1016 runs in 31 matches at an average of 39.07 with a strike rate of 134.74 in the T20 World Cup. While Kohli took just 25 matches to complete this feat and maintained an average of 83.42.

The former skipper is right now in red-hot form and currently the highest run-scorer for India in the T20 World Cup. Earlier in the tournament, Kohli secured another record of becoming the first Indian reach the 1000-run mark in T20 World Cup history.

Kohli’s knock of 82 off 53 in team India’s opening game in the World Cup came at a crucial time, when India was struggling at 31 for 4 at one stage while chasing a 160-run target. He alongside Hardik Pandya added 113-run for the fifth wicket, Pandya left out in the process, but Kohli remained till last at the crease and handed India a win.

He again remained not out in the match against Netherlands and recorded a fifty too. While his third fifty in the tournament came against Bangladesh.

The men in blue are currently standing on top in their Group, and their last match is against Zimbabwe on Sunday, November 6.
