Asia Cup 2022 shifted to UAE, confirms BCCI president Sourav Ganguly

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly confirmed that the Asia Cup 2022 which was scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka has been shifted to UAE.

The development came after Sri Lanka Cricket had informed the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) that the board will not be in a position to host the Asia Cup T20 2022 due to economic and political crises in the country.

“Asia Cup will be in UAE, as it is the only place where there won’t be rains,” said BCCI president Sourav Ganguly after the Board’s Apex Council meeting in Mumbai.

During the last couple of weeks when it was looking not appropriate to conduct the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka there were some speculations that it may be held in Bangladesh instead, but in the Asian Cricket Council’s meeting, the board chose UAE as the perfect destination, considering the rainy season in other countries as UAE is the best option due to no rains prediction during the schedule.

Asia Cup 2022 Schedule

Asia Cup is slated to take place from August 27 to September 11 and will play in T20 format. The Asian Cricket Council has opted to organize the 15th edition of the Asia Cup 20-over format as part of upcoming T20 World Cup preparations, which are scheduled to be held in October.

The tournament will feature six teams with India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh already clinched seats in the competition, while UAE, Nepal, Hong Kong, and Oman will lock horns in qualifiers to grab the one remaining spot, starting on August 21.

Team India will start the Asia Cup 2022 as the defending champions as previously they outlasted Bangladesh in the 50-over Asia Cup final in 2018.
