Alex Tyson Carey, popularly known as Alex Carey was born in Loxton, South Australia on 27 August 1991. Alex Carey is an Australia left-hand wicketkeeper batter who is the part of the Australian squad for the past couple of years in all three formats of cricket. Alex Carey has also captained Australia in the ODI format. He has also played Australian rules football previously. Carey’s career has been full of ups and downs, he made his debut many years back but made his place in the national squad in 2018.

Alex Carey started playing cricket at the early age of 5 years. He had the passion to play cricket as well as football. In his early days, he was more interested in football as he played in the Australian National Football League at the age of 15 years. Alex Carey was also included in the South Australia team for the AFL championship back in 2008 and then in 2009.

In 2010, Alex Carey was offered a contract by South Australian Cricket but he turned down the offer and went on to play Australian Football League in 2010. In 2012 Australia Football League, Alex Carey was appointed as the captain of his team. However, later he wasn’t given many chances so he decided to switch his career in cricket.

Alex Carey started off his domestic cricket journey while playing for Glenelg Cricket club in 2012. He started off his career on a high note and was included in the squad of South Australia within a year. Alex Carey made his List A debut in a match against New South Wales in Ryobi Cup tournament and in the same month Alex Carey made his first-class debut for South Australia in Sheffield Shield Trophy.

In 2013-14, Alex Carey maintained his position in the South Australia team but didn’t get many chances to play due to his poor form. In the same season, he became the wicketkeeper and also changed his batting position in down the order.

In 2015-16 season turned out to be the turning point for Alex Carey as he smashed 822 runs in just 10 matches including two 150+ scores.

In 2016-17 Sheffield Shield Trophy, Alex Carey smashed 500 runs and also completed his 59 dismissals as the wicketkeeper in the season which was the highest in a single season by any wicketkeeper.

By the year 2017-18, Alex Carey became one of the important member of the domestic team and was also considered as the best young wicketkeeper at that time. Alex Carey was roped in by Sussex County Club to play in the English County championship and T20 Blast tournament in May 2019 in England.

Alex Carey made his IPL debut when he was roped in by the Delhi Capitals in IPL season 2020. However, Alex only played 3 matches in the season and scored 32 runs.

Alex Carey has played 54 first class matches and scored 2854 runs including 5 centuries and 16 half centuries with the highest score of 143 runs in an innings.

Alex Carey made his International Debut for the national side in an ODI match against England on 19 January 2018. However, he didn’t score many runs in his debut series.

In February 2018, Alex Carey was selected in the squad for the T20I series against New Zealand and made his debut on 3rd February.

Within 4 months, Alex Carey was appointed as the vice-captain of the T20I team.

Alex Carey was then selected in the Australian squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019 and scored 375 runs in 10 matches. Alex Carey also made a record of most dismissals in a single edition of World Cup by a wicketkeeper. Alex Carey took 18 catches and did 2 stumpings in the tournament and was also picked up in the Team of the tournament as the wicketkeeper.

In September 2020, Alex Carey smashed his maiden ODI century in a match against England and helped his team in winning the match and the series.

Alex Carey remained with the team in complete 2020 and 2021 season but didn’t get many chances due to the tough competition in the squad for the position of wicketkeeper batter.

Alex Carey was named as the captain of the national side for 1 ODI match against West Indies when Aaron Finch was ruled out of the match due to an injury.

In December 2021, Alex Carey made his Test Debut in a match against England in Ashes 2021-22 and made a record of most catches on debut by a wicketkeeper by picking up 8 catches.
