What’s the difference between MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya?

Even though it has been three years since India’s most famous captain retired from international cricket, every Indian fan still emembers him whenever India plays a game, whether big or small.

He was the skipper of India for a long time, and after him, Virat Kohli led the team for a long time as well, but after Kohli stepped down, the Indian side has attempted several captains but has yet to find a consistent one. However, Rohit Sharma is the main regular captain, but his absence from time to time due to injury, workload or testing the young players puts the squad in a difficult situation.

The management expects that Hardik Pandya will be the next big thing to lead India for a significant amount of time which brings into light the comparison game between MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya.

Difference between MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya

MS Dhoni

Dhoni, often referred to as “Captain Cool”, noted for his remarkable leadership abilities and calm demeanour on the pitch. He was a wicketkeeper-batsman who was widely regarded as one of the game’s top finishers in limited-overs cricket. Dhoni was well-known for his strategic thinking, ability to read the game, and ability to deal with stressful conditions.

MS Dhoni was the captain of the Indian cricket team for a long time. His batting approach was defined by premeditated aggression and a keen awareness of the game’s requirements. He had a talent for timing his innings, which made him an invaluable asset when chasing targets.

Dhoni guided India to multiple titles, including the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, the 2010 and 2016 Asia Cups, and the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy. His commanding leadership style and tactical aptitude helped him become one of India’s most successful captains.

Dhoni retired from international Test cricket in 2014. He later resigned as captain of the limited overs forms as well. He played as a wicketkeeper-batsman until August 2020, when he announced his retirement from international cricket.

Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya is an all-rounder who can contribute with both the bat and the ball. He is well-known for his aggressive batting style, ability to knock massive sixes, and function as a medium pacer. Pandya brings a dynamic aspect to the team with his ability to flip games with rapid runs and critical ball breaks.

Pandya was a rising star recognised for his powerful batting and all-around abilities during 2016. He in no time received the tag of an important player for India, particularly in the T20 and ODI forms.

He missed some time due to injury, but he returned to the pitch with newfound confidence. Became the captain of the IPL team Gujarat Titans, and led the team to victory in their first game.

Pandya then given the opportunity to lead India in the Ireland series in 2022, which India won, ushering in a new era in which Hardik Pandya is seen as the next possible great captain after Rohit Sharma.

Dhoni & Kohli vs Hardik & Tilak Varma incident

Dhoni, who was at the crease with Kohli during the 2014 ICC T20 World Cup semifinal match against South Africa won many hearts when he purposefully played out a delivery as a dot ball, giving Kohli, who had scored an unbeaten 72 in that match, an opportunity to hit the winning runs.

The same was the situation was during India’s third T20 against West Indies in 2023. When only two runs were required from 13 balls, skipper Hardik Pandya did whole opposite to Dhoni, as he came up and hit a six off Rovman Powell to seal the victory. This decision, despite securing India’s triumph, left many wondering why Tilak was not given the opportunity to score his well-deserve 50.
