Wanindu Hasaranga Biography: Wanindu Hasaranga was born on 29 July 1997 in Galle, Sri Lanka. He is famously known as Pinnaduwage Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva. He is a Sri Lankan right-arm leg-break bowler. This southpaw also bats well in the lower middle order. Since his debut in T20Is in 2019, Wanindu has been a constant member of the Sri Lankan team in all three formats of cricket. Wanindu Hasaranga initially started off as a fast bowler, however, switched to spin after the guidance of his coach. Hasaranga has proved to be Sri Lanka’s best spinner in recent times. In TATA IPL 2022, Wanindu Hasaranga was roped in by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whopping amount of 10.75 crores.

Wanindu Hasaranga started playing cricket at the early age of 11 years. Initially, he started off as a fast bowler. He attended Richmond College in Galle and played many matches for the college team. During his early days at the college, after the guidance of his mentor and coach, he switched to spin bowling and started to practice leg-spin. At the age of 16 years, Hasaranga switched his bowling style. At the age of 17 years, he was picked up in the college team for a local tournament where he picked 28 wickets in just 6 matches.

Wanindu Hasaranga Domestic Career

Hasaranga was picked in the domestic circuit based on his performances on the club level. He made his List A debut in 2015.

In 2016, Wanindu Hasaranga was picked up in the squad of the Sri Lanka Under-19 team for the ICC Under-19 World Cup. Hasaranga played all the matches for Sri Lanka and picked 7 wickets in the tournament. His 3 wickets in the quarter-final helped his team in reaching the semis.

In February 2016, Wanindu Hasaranga made his first-class debut while playing for the Ports Authority Club.

During the 2016-17 first-class domestic season, Wanindu Hasaranga won the most promising cricketer award. He showed his all-around skills in the season. Hasaranga picked 15 wickets and also scored 586 runs with the bat.

In 2018, Wanindu Hasaranga was picked in the squad of Colombo for the Super Provincial One Day tournament and ended the season as the leading run-scorer for Colombo. He smashed 765 runs in just 9 matches during the season.

In 2020, Wanindu Hasaranga was roped in by Jaffna Stallions in the Lanka Premier League and ended up as the highest wicket-taker in the tournament.

Wanindu Hasaranga International Career

Wanindu Hasaranga was picked up in the Sri Lankan squad for the ODI series against Zimbabwe in 2017. Hasaranga made his international debut on 2nd July 2017 and picked a hat-trick in the match. He became the youngest player and first leg spinner to achieve the record.

In 2018, Hasaranga was given a national contract by Sri Lanka Cricket Board. In September 2019, Wanindu Hasaranga made his T20I debut.

During the T20I series against Pakistan in 2019, Hasaranga picked 9 wickets in 3 matches and helped his team in winning all three matches of the series. Wanindu Hasaranga eventually won the player of the series award.

In 2020, Wanindu Hasaranga was picked up in the squad for the ODI series against West Indies and because of his all-around skills in all the matches, Sri Lanka won the series by 3-0.

Wanindu Hasaranga made his Test debut in December 2020 against South Africa. He picked 4 wickets in the match and also smashed his maiden half-century.

In July 2021, Wanindu Hasaranga was ranked as the Number 2 T20I bowler in ICC rankings. In the same year, he was picked in the Squad for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup where he picked up his first T20 hat-trick. Wanindu Hasaranga emerged as the leading wicket-taker in the T20 World Cup. He bagged 16 wickets in the tournament.
