On the third day of the first test match, the England side was dismissed for 149 in their second innings, Anrich Nortje bowelled a superb spell by taking three wickets in 10 balls making the life of the batsman more difficult. The left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj also picked up two wickets giving the South African side to register their win at Lords with 2 days and an innings to spare.
England lost their first test match under the leadership of Ben Stokes and Coach Brendon McCullum, this was the fifth match under their guidance and the England side won all four previous matches under Stokes and McCullum’s guidance.
In the first Innings, the England side managed to put a score of 165 after getting destroyed by the Rabada pace attack, only Ollie Pope managed to stand strong for a while but as the time passed Ollie was clean bowled for 73 runs from 102 balls by Rabada.
South Africa in reply to England’s 165 scored a brilliant 326, the openers were very crucial in giving a good opening partnership for the South African side where Sarel Erwee tried to capitalize on the situation by scoring 73 runs in 146 balls before falling prey to the England skipper.
Both Broad and Stokes with their 3 wicket haul stop the South Africans from taking the first innings for a ride.
After taking the lead of 161 runs the South African side was sitting comfortably. The England side came on to bat with a positive note in their second innings but they were unsuccessful in creating an impact as the pace attack from Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, Rabada, and spinner Keshav Maharaj destroyed the England batting line-up, giving them no chance to make a comeback.
Anrich Nortje’s spell simply broke the back the bone the England side in the second innings restricting England to 149 runs and calming their victory by an Innings and 12 runs with 2 days remaining.
This victory has made South Africa jump their rankings to the number one spot in the World Test Championship.
With the early win over the might England side the South African team will have a couple of days extra to rest before the second test at Old Trafford on Thursday.
