Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy

Since winning the Champions Trophy in England in 2013, the Men in Blue have not triumphed in an ICC competition. There were high hopes from the Rohit-led side to bring home the trophy, but that didn’t materialise, as we went without a trophy and lost our eighth straight knockout game since 2013. Let us look at Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy in detail.

When examining India’s best T20 World Cup performance, we must go all the way back to 2007, when they won the inaugural title in South Africa. In recent competitions, they have had formidable teams, but in true South African fashion, they have consistently lost.

Should Rohit Sharma step down as captain of India’s T20 team after World Cup debacle?

After Virat Kohli resigned after the World Cup in the UAE in 2021, Rohit Sharma assumed control of the T20. The Hitman has already shattered a few records in the last 12 months. By surpassing Kohli’s record of 30 games, he became the second-most successful Indian T20I skipper during the Asia Cup.

With his 16th victory as a captain following India’s victory over South Africa in the Thiruvananthapuram T20I, he also surpassed MS Dhoni’s previous mark for the most T20I victories by an Indian captain in a single year.

Rohit Sharma appointed as India captain in 2021

Rohit’s tenure as the T20 team’s skipper on a full-time basis hasn’t been that long. Only a few months have passed. But after the dreams shattered tournament in Australia, it will still be a wise decision for the Hitman to relinquish his position as T20I captain. He, the team management, and the selectors must keep the big vision in mind after this year’s World Cup. 2024 will see the West Indies and the United States host the next T20 World Cup. Rohit will not surely be a member of the team because he will be 37 by then.

Other factors, besides age, are also at play. Rohit has experienced fitness issues, and he needs to start reducing his workload, and that should happen right away. Remember that India will also host the 50-over World Cup in 2019.

He must be alert and fit for that challenge if the Men in Blue are to succeed. Given that he will be 40 when the 2027 50-over World Cup is played, it may be his final opportunity to win the tournament.

During the bilateral assignments, Sharma was outstanding.  The expectations were extremely high, especially given how India performed in the bilaterals. But India’s performance in the international competition stayed the same. First, they were unable to advance to the Asia Cup finals. Then, a startling semi-final loss left everyone feeling deeply conflicted and calling for Rohit Sharma to step down as captain.

In the upcoming few months, the selectors will probably name a new T20I skipper in order to ensure a seamless transition in the Indian dressing room.
