Shreyas Iyer, the gifted batsman from Mumbai, has reportedly got a “heads up” to play at the No.4 position from the Indian team management after his consistently brilliant performances in the white-ball format in the past few months.
Although Team India tried out many players for the number four spot ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup, none of them was successful. It was used as an unfixed position with Vijay Shankar not being able to deliver the goods in England.
After the innings of 63 of 32 balls, which included five huge sixers, in Nagpur in the T20 decider, Iyer was quoted by the PTI as saying, “For me personally, they (team management) have given me a heads up that ‘You’ll be there at No.4. So just back yourself and believe in yourself.”
He added, “It has been a really important last few series for me to set the benchmark at the No. 4 position, which all of us are competing for at the moment.”
Iyer was successful also in West Indies where he scored two half-centuries batting at No 5.
