The Story Behind Makeover Of Mohammed Shami

Mohammed Shami In Team India

Mohammed Shami is now one of the best right-arm fast bowlers of Team India to whom the skipper turns for necessary breakthroughs.

In the death overs, the team, which looks to play out Bumrah, tries to take advantage of Shami at the other end. But Shami comes into his own by bowling yorkers to dismiss the lower-order batsman.

Mohammed Shami In Past Matches

In the ODI against Australia in Rajkot, he struck the first blow when the visitors were chasing 341 by removing Warner. That was the only success that Shami achieved in his first spell. He struck again to get wickets late in their innings. Partnering Bumrah to put pressure on Aussies, he removed Pat Cummins and Ashton Turner with yorkers, even though the game had gone beyond the reach of the Australian team.

Turner, who returned to ODIs after nine months, reminded Indians of his stupendous 84 off 43 balls in 2019 in Mohali to help Australia chase a humungous 359. But this time Shami gave Turner no chance as he attacked him from the word go.

It was repeated again in the series decider match in Bangalore when Shami dismissed Zampa and Cummins with yorkers in the death overs. Australia needed 330 but ended up getting 286.

Changes In Shami

Shami’s changed his work principles and fitness to make a good comeback. Shami played five ODIs in the Indian tour of Australia for the limited-overs series though his fitness wasn’t up to scratch at that time. He lacked intensity in his bowling as he would not bowl five balls consistently. Though he would bowl well, he would leak many boundaries.

But in New Zealand, all that changed. He came out of that rut in his ODI career since then to become a regular bowler of India in all the formats.
