Beating the COVID-19 hurdles, The Lankan Premier League (LPL) is finally back on track. The maiden season will run from November 26 to December 16. That said, Pakistani legend Shahid Afridi will lead the Galle Gladiators squad.
It is no surprise that Afridi’s inception will garner global attention, citing a successful season for LPL ahead. However, the franchise has already been in several troubles, failing to bring International superstars like Chris Gayle, Faf du Plessis, David Malan, and Liam Plunkett, amongst others, in their roster.

Meanwhile, Afridi’s entry appears to be a sigh of relief for them. On Saturday, Nadeem Omar has announced the news, sending fans into a frenzy.
Omar, who also owns the Quetta Gladiators in PSL, is optimistic about having his team led by Afridi in LPL. Nevertheless, he was initially opting for Sarfaraz Ahmed to don the cap. But Ahmed is selected for the New Zealand tour and will miss the LPL debut season. While Omar was seemingly running out of options, Afridi is finally there to ‘save the day’.
Breaking the news, Omar has officially said, “Afridi will now captain the side since he is the senior-most player in our franchise and he has experience of captaincy.”

Shahid Afridi and More in the LPL season
Although several International stars are missing from the nearing LPL season, there are a handful of Pakistani cricketers on the roster.
Apart from Afridi, Sohail Tanvir, Mohammad Amir, Ehsan Ali, Azham Khan, Usman Shinwari, and Shoaib Malik have also made it to the league. Meanwhile, left-arm pacer Sohail Tanvir and batsman Ravinder Pal Singh have been tested positive with coronavirus on Colombo. Thus, their chances of playing are at stake.
LPL will have five teams in total, and it is expected to be a nail-biting thriller for cricket fans.
