Mumbai Indians’ fate has not been hidden from the public in this season of the Indian Premier League. Team Mumbai has constantly been in the last position, which is number 10, on the points table for quite some time now. There was so much going wrong for the Mumbai Team. Once, five-times championship winner, Mumbai has shocked the fans in the 2022 games.
Back to back, the team lost 8 matches from the beginning of this season! MI lost 2 matches against LSG. The skipper, Rohit Sharma, stepped up to take responsibility for the team’s poor performance. He said, “I take the full responsibility of not putting the team in the situation of what they expect from me. I back myself to go out there and enjoy the game and do what I have been doing all these years. It’s important to keep looking forward.”
There was no consistency that could be observed in the team’s gameplay. A lot of changes were being made constantly. There was a lack in the variety of bowling. Rohit Sharma was not in his full form as the MI captain. The responsibility of the national team as well as the Mumbai team seemed like had burdened Sharma too much.
MI secured its first win against Rajasthan Royals in match number 44 which was then followed by another close win against Gujrat Titans by 5 runs. In the last 5 matches that Mumbai Indians have played, It has won 3 out of the 5.
The overall performance of the team has definitely changed for the better. The Mumbai skipper has started getting back into his form. But amidst these changes, what is most noticeable is that bowlers have picked up their pace. Over the last few matches that the team Mumbai has played, there has been a noticeable change in the bowling.
Saving Grace for MI
Daniels Sams’ bowling has a significant contribution to MI’s win, especially, in their match against Gujrat Titans. Daniel Sams’s deft change of speed paid off, as he surrendered only three runs in the last over to protect the 9-run lead and lead MI to their second win of the IPL 2022 season. Not just that but, in their latest match against CSK, his skills fetched him the award of Man of the Match.
Another young cricketer that has taken the spotlight in team MI is Tilak Varma. Tilak Varma has shown promising signs with his batting, which bodes well for the Mumbai Indians. Varma, with his fresh energy, has also overshadowed some big names in the team.
Rohit Sharma lavished appreciation on you Tilak Varma after your unbeaten 34-run innings helped his team cross the finish line against CSK. The MI captain also stated that he believes the southpaw has the ability to represent India in all three forms.
In his debut IPL series, Tilak Varma has played 12 matches so far. In the games that he has played, he managed to score 368 runs with an outstanding average of 40.89.
What does it mean for MI?
In truth, MI’s future this season does not seem to get any better than this. They might not play in the playoffs but, considering the start that they had, the audience was left with no expectations for them. The winning graph for team Mumbai has definitely gone up but they still remain at the last position on the points table. Given the circumstances, of the season for MI was looking much darker but the two players have saved the face of the team, and the team is certainly not signing off with zero wins.
