Chasing a small target of 154 on the Pune pitch during the 42nd match of IPL 2022, Punjab Kings could not manage to continue their win streak and lost the match by 20 runs. Lucknow’s bowlers pulled off a great game with the ball ensuring they are the kings of MCA today. Krunal, Mohsin, and Chameera bowled beautiful spells where they collectively took 7 wickets off 52 runs in 12 overs, which turned the game for LSG. They have now reached up to 3rd position on the points table while Punjab solidified their number 8 position.
What we saw today has been a standard story for Lucknow Super Giants and Punjab Kings. The Giants play like a team, they don’t make their own rules that they can’t follow rather they follow basics and try till the end. Punjab on the other hand have played like finishers, even their batter no. 3 tries to finish the game hitting big shots in 3rd over. Their approach has been reckless and that is what has led them to be around the pit of the points table. They made poor choices and went on to hit unnecessary shots and avoided singles that cost them today’s relatively easier match. Their underperformance has not turned into a heedless attitude which is not helping the franchise.

The losing captain Mayank Agarwal talked about what went wrong for them as he said, “I think we just kept losing wickets. We had batsmen who were set but we kept getting out. That’s where we lost the game, so many soft dismissals for us. Obviously it’s disappointing. We need to face the truth that we didn’t bat well today. It should have been chased down but we were below par with bat. The new ball was doing a bit. There was good bounce and it was seaming a bit. So the new ball was crucial but after that it did get a lot better to bat on. I think the one odd ball was stopping and turning a bit. I think we’re bowling exceedingly well. As a bowling unit, we’re doing a lot of things right. Arshdeep has stepped up, even Rahul got wickets today, KG being the big guy has stepped up and gotten us important wickets.”

The winning captain analysed his team’s game quite well as he said “I was disappointed and fuming at the end of the first innings. Stupid cricket with the bat. It does happen but we did talk about it at the time-out. We did talk that we can defend 160 as this wasn’t a great pitch. The crucial runs at the back end and then the execution with the ball helped us win. We need to get better with the bat. Half-time, when Quinny and Deepak were batting. They paced it really really well to get to 60 in 9 overs on a tricky wicket. Had we batted smartly, we could have gotten to 180-190. The way we responded with the ball was phenomenal.

Krunal has been brilliant throughout the tournament. In this season he has really worked on his bowling. Bowling economically is important but he has been giving us two three wickets in the middle overs. Bishnoi is an aggressive bowler. We are fine with him going for a few fours and sixes looking to go for wickets. I think we just need to be smarter in reading the game. If we could have not played too many shots we could have done better. We have been good on the field and good with the ball. Just need to keep repeating the good things”
