IPL 2025 overseas players update: Key absences, new faces, and playoff readiness

IPL 2025 Overseas Players Update and Availability: Full Team-Wise Breakdown

After a temporary halt, IPL 2025 is set to resume on May 17, reigniting the race to the playoffs. With most teams having just a few league-stage games left, the return of international players or the lack thereof will play a crucial role in shaping the final standings. We look at IPL 2025 Overseas Players Update.

The interruption has forced franchises to reassess their line-ups, especially as some overseas players are unavailable for the rest of the season due to national commitments or travel restrictions. In response, teams have lined up replacements and short-term signings to maintain squad balance.

Some players will leave right after the league stage ends due to their international commitments, and their temporary replacements will join their respective teams during the playoffs.

Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals will benefit from Faf du Plessis and Tristan Stubbs (league stage), although they lose Mitchell Starc and Jake Fraser-McGurk, with Mustafizur Rahman filling in briefly, but only till May 24.

Gujarat Titans

Gujarat Titans, currently top on the table with 16 points, will miss Jos Buttler and Kagiso Rabada after the league stage but have roped Kusal Mendis in the playoffs. They retain a strong core with Rashid Khan, Sherfane Rutherford, and Gerald Coetzee.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders remain competitive with stalwarts like Russell and Narine, despite losing Moeen Ali and Rovman Powell.

Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants’ playoff hopes hinge on consistent performances from Marsh and Pooran. One of their key performers, Aiden Markram will remain with the team till the league stage ends. Will O’ Rourke has been included in the squad in place of Mayank Yadav

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad, effectively out of the race, will finish with a trimmed overseas unit. However, their skipper Pat Cummins and star batter Travis Head will finish their duty and play for the franchise’s remaining league games.

Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians, hot on their heels with 14 points, will transition from Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton to Jonny Bairstow and Richard Gleeson for the playoffs.

Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings have a balanced overseas contingent, with Mitchell Owen, Marco Jansen, and Marcus Stoinis are stepping up. Jensen, Owen, Stoinis and Azmatullah Omarzai will stay with the team for the league stage games, Kyle Jamieson has been signed as replacement for injured Lockie Ferguson.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Royal Challengers Bengaluru, also on 16 points, have Liam Livingstone, Phil Salt, Tim David among their key foreign assets, though Josh Hazlewood’s participation remains uncertain, but he is likely to rejoin the team before the playoffs.

Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings

Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, both eliminated, will use their remaining games to test bench strength. Notably, the absence of key players like Jofra Archer, Sam Curran, and Rachin Ravindra marks a significant setback for CSK.

As the tournament resumes, squad depth and adaptability will be the differentiators. Teams still in the hunt must balance rotation, fatigue, and form, especially with playoffs looming on the horizon.
