The 2007 triumph

Team India entered the first-ever ICC T20 World Cup with an almost young squad, with MS Dhoni named as the skipper, who was also new to that role.

India also started their campaign in a most dramatic way as possible, as team had to play a bowl-out against Pakistan, which India won to enter the next round of the competition.

Yuvraj’s love affair with fast knocks

The team then lost to New Zealand, and with their next game was against England, everyone thought about India’s exit, but the game and result blew everyone’s mind, as on September 19th, 2007, Yuvraj Singh smacked 6 sixes in a row and completed the fastest ever fifty at the time to lead India to a 218, and the men in blue eventually won the game by 18 runs.

They overcame South Africa in the next game and entered the semifinals, where they defeated Australia to book their spot for the finals.

The Thrilling finale

The final saw India vs Pakistan clash, which again went to the last over.

Riding high on Gambhir’s 75, and Rohit Sharma’s 16-ball 30, the Indian team managed to post 157 on board.

Pakistan, in reply, lost their first wicket in the first over itself, but still were ahead in the game till 5.3 overs at 53 for 2.

Things drastically changed for the men in green and they lost 4 wickets in the next 6 overs and collected only 24 runs.

Misbah-ul-Haq stood tall at one end though and took the game to the last over with the help of little contributions from lower order batters.

The Masterstroke

Dhoni’s mastermind came into play then, as he opted for Joginder Sharma instead of experienced Harbhajan Singh.

Sharma started with a wide and also gave a six before forcing Misbah to play scoop shot that landed comfortably in the hands of Sreesanth, and India clinched the title.

India performance in T20 World Cups over the years

India have appeared in 7 T20 World Cups since their 2007 WC triumph but failed to win any. The team reached the final once (2014) and semifinals twice (2016 & 2022) in their seven outings, with the weakest years being 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2021.
