First New Zealander to hit a double century (237*)

Martin Guptill

Martin James Guptill, also known as Martin Guptill, turns 36 today. Guptill is currently one of the most seasoned cricketers on the team.

Has long been New Zealand’s choice for the opening position. Guptill, who was born in Auckland, attracted the attention of cricket fans when he represented his nation in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2006.

Since then, the player has been unstoppable as he developed into one of the current generation’s biggest power hitters. He is a household name in the limited-overs competition. Guptill made his international debut in 2009 and has since played for his country in 45 Tests, 129 ODIs, and 61 Twenty20 Internationals.

In the 2006 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka, Guptill made his debut for New Zealand. He played his first One Day International (ODI) for New Zealand on January 10, 2009, in Auckland against the West Indies.

He became the first New Zealander to hit a century on debut. His total of 122 not out is the best score on debut for New Zealand in an ODI, and the second highest debut score ever in ODIs – and he was the first New Zealander to carry the bat through entire ODI innings.

Stats

Guptill has scored 7346 runs at an outstanding average of 41.73 in 198 ODIs. Guptill’s total influence on New Zealand cricket cannot be quantified solely in terms of numbers, though. Guptill is renowned for his explosive sixes and powerful attacking play. But his contribution to New Zealand’s white-ball revolution will go on as his lasting legacy.
