#5 Virender Sehwag – 119 vs Pakistan, 2008

It was a league match wherein Pakistan chose to bat first and made full use of the conditions. Their captain, Shoaib Malik hit a top century to power the side to 299-4. Pakistan in hindsight could have added a few more but it was a total they would have been happy with. India in response lost the wicket of Gautam Gambhir early.

But Virender Sehwag and Suresh Raina put on a brutal second wicket stand of 198 runs. They scored them off just 24.4 overs. Sehwag hit a masterful 119 off 95 balls striking at 125.26 hitting 12 fours and 5 sixes. 

#4 Shikhar Dhawan – 127 vs Hong Kong, 2018

Another Delhi opener features on this list. Shikhar Dhawan remains one of India’s finest ODI openers. He scored a ton against Hong Kong in the 2018 edition. Hong Kong in a surprising move chose to field first. Indian openers got off to a steady start. Ambati Rayudu batting at number 3 consolidated the innings with Shikhar Dhawan putting on a 116 runs stand for the second wicket.

But it was Dhawan’s 127 off 120 that ensured India finished with 285-7. Hong Kong gave India a mighty scare but eventually falling short. Dhawan’s knock was the point of difference between the two sides.

#3 Sourav Ganguly – 135* vs Bangladesh, 2000

It was a forgettable edition for the Indian team who put on their most dismal performance ever in the tournament. The new captain, Sourav Ganguly was the only shining light in the campaign. India won their only game against Bangladesh who themselves batted with great authority in this contest. Bangladesh made 249-6 batting first and India made light work of the chase with Ganguly leading from the front. He made an unbeaten 135 from just 124 balls to see India home with 59 balls to spare.

#2 Virat Kohli – 136 vs Bangladesh, 2014

It was that phase in Virat Kohli’s career where a high-scoring run-chase became his staple diet. Bangladesh made a competitive score of 279-7 batting first. Mushfiqur Rahim top-scored with 117. Virat Kohli, the stand-in skipper for the tournament played a captain’s knock. He struck a delightful 136 off just 122 balls to kill the chase completely. Kohli’s innings comprised 16 fours and 2 sixes. India won with an over and 6 wickets to spare.

#1 Virat Kohli – 183 vs Pakistan, 2012

This game in the 2012 edition saw Virat kohli being crowned as Asia’s number one ODI batsman. Chasing a score of 330 to stay alive in the tournament, Kohli walked in 2 balls into the chase. He left the field only after ensuring that the match ends in India’s court. Kohli smashed all the Pakistani bowlers to hit a career best 183 off 148 balls. In over four decades of this tournament, this knock continues to be ranked amongst the greatest ones ever played in the format!
