Theunis de Bruyn Is Named Dean Elgar’s Concussion Substitute

Theunis de Bruyn was named and approved in the ongoing third Test against India as Dean Elgar’s concussion substitute after the opener suffered a concussion on Monday in Ranchi.

Elgar was struck flush on the helmet on the side of the head when he took his eyes off the short ball from Umesh Yadav on the third day. He was batting on 16 then in the second innings as South Africa were asked to follow on.

Elgar sat down for quite some time after that, trying to recover from the blow. He didn’t come back after the tea and was “assessed as per standard ICC concussion protocols.” The visitors then named a similar top-order as a replacement, De Bruyn, who will probably come out to bat in the second innings of South Africa at the fall of the sixth wicket.

In response to India’s first innings score of 497/9 declared, South Africa was bowled out for 162 in their first innings on the third morning before the hosts decided to enforce the follow on.

India is leading 2-0 in the series of three matches.
