Sri Lanka Hits A Major Loss As ‘Angelo Mathews Announces His Retirement’ Ahead Of The India Series

Since the governing body established a new pay structure, Sri Lanka cricket has been in trouble. Many senior players were dissatisfied with the new structure and declined to accept national contracts, making themselves unavailable. As a result, the national board has yet to name teams for the next white-ball series against India, which begins in a few days. Angelo Mathews retirement ahead of the India series.

Sri Lanka Cricket appears to have been shocked by the news that experienced Sri Lankan batsman Angelo Mathews has announced his retirement from international cricket. Mathews has suggested as much to the SLC board and will announce his final decision in the following weeks.

Angelo Mathews, who was included in the respective 30-member squad, requested Sri Lanka Cricket to relieve him from National Duties, owing to personal reasons, until further notice,” revealed by the SLC Official.

Due to paternity leave, the 34-year-old was absent for Sri Lanka’s recent tour of England. He had withdrawn his name from consideration for the tour since Mathews and his wife Heshani are expecting their third child.

Mathews was much missed by the visiting Sri Lankan team, who lost both the ODI and T20I series to England.

Angelo Mathews, Dimuth Karunaratne, and Dinesh Chandimal were not considered by the national selection for the recent Bangladesh and England series. Mathews, though, was offered a contract for the India series, according to SLC. As a result, numerous seasoned players may be added to the equation.

With the 2023 World Cup in mind, the selectors strict selection process had already set up internal plans to remove the senior players to make room for the youngsters.

Mathews, a crucial allrounder for Sri Lanka, made his international debut in November 2008 against Zimbabwe. His batting abilities, as well as his medium-pace bowling, have been a huge help to the Sri Lankan team.
