South African Pacer Morne Morkel Awaiting BBL Offers

Morne Morkel one of the former spearheads of the South African pace attack is currently in Sydney representing the Manly-Warringah club in the Sydney Premier competition. Although he is open to playing in the BBL in December, following South Africa’s Super League T20 tournament, he is yet to get any offers from BBL clubs.

One of the primary reasons is that each BBL team can afford to accommodate only two overseas players. Sporting News quotes Morkel as saying, “I’ve put out some feelers (in Australia) but probably left if a little bit too late for this year as far as getting my name in the draw (for the BBL). I’m still finding my feet here but I’m happy to play this season if a team has a few niggles or injuries.”

The Proteas player added, “If they can see I can add some value then that would be great.”
Meanwhile, Morkel, who is mulling ending his first-class career after a stint of one more year with Surrey, said that he would be glad to end it at Manly.

“I love giving back and working with youngsters. When I started there was nothing better than to sit with senior guys in the change-room and learn from them,” he said.

Morkel concluded by saying, “I really enjoyed it (his first game). I’m happy to play when I can.”
