On this day, in 1992, David Gower played his last knock in test cricket. Regarded as one of the most stylish left-handed batsmen of his time, David Grover led the England cricket team during the 1980s.

Gower competed for England in 114 One Day Internationals after 117 Test matches. Gower scored a staggering 8231 Test and 3170 ODI runs during his brilliant cricket career.

Gower produced a lot of game-changing performances over the course of his Test career. The batsman, though, underperformed in his last international match. The maestro was only able to produce 27 and 1 in his final game in international cricket played against Pakistan.

ENG Vs PAK 5th Test 1992

Gower’s final game was the fifth and final Test of the England vs. Pakistan series in August 1992. The game was crucial since the Test series was tied at 1-1 coming into it.

Batting first England scored 207 runs. With 60 runs, Mike Atherton led the home team in scoring. While Gower only managed to score 27 and was clean bowled by Aaqib Javed. The star of Pakistan bowling department was Wasim Akram, who grabbed six wickets to break the back of the English batting line-up.

In reply, Pakistan posted a solid 380 in their first innings, with the help of outstanding batting performances from four half-centurions (Shoaib Mohammad, Javed Miandad, Asif Mustaba, and Rashid Latif) that puts pressure on hosts and everyone was hoping to see Gower’s magic to save the match for England.

England were 55 for 3 and 118 runs behind Pakistan when David Gower came into bat, but that was not his test match as he was again clean bowled against the right-arm seamer, this time by Waqar Younis, after scoring just 1.

The hosts somehow reached 153 for 5 with 20 runs still required to cross the 173-mark to avoid innings loss humiliation. And suddenly a major collapse occurred with English side bundled out for 174, giving Pakistan just 2-run target to chase, which they chased in first ball itself and claimed the series 2-1.
