On This Day : Celebrating Yuvraj Singh’s 12th Anniversary Of Six Sixes

It was exactly 12 years ago, Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has made an unbreakable record in the world cricket. On September 19, 2007, Yuvraj Singh became the first cricketer to hit six sixes in an over in a T20 World Cup.

Yuvraj smashed against England fast bowler Stuart Broad in a T20 World Cup match in Kingsmead Durban to mark his name on the history books. Till the date, Yuvraj was the only Indian to hit six sixes in an over in any form of the game.

Celebrating Yuvi’s 12th-anniversary, BCCI has shared a picture comprising each of Yuvraj’s sixes.

During the inaugural edition of the tournament in South Africa, India was spotted in a tough situation where they had to beat England to make their way to semi-finals of the T20 World Cup.

The Men in Blue were with 171 for 3 at the end of the 18th-over in their first innings. With Yuvraj and Dhoni on the field, looking on to pull the score by collecting as many runs in the finishing overs.

In the 18th over, Yuvraj came out with two fours, which saw an impatience in the England bowler Andrew Flintoff. After which the pair got involved in a big argument which came to an end with the on-field umpire’s intervention.

“When you play for the country the emotions are always high. You can get angry too… Flintoff probably didn’t like the shots I played off his bowling in the previous over so he had a few words to say and that just motivated me,” – Yuvraj told.

It was Stuart Broad who came on to the creases in the 19th over of the innings to dismiss yuvi off the field. But the left-handed batsman from Punjab didn’t give a change to the England bowler and made massive hits of six sixes of consecutive deliveries from Broad.

The first one went over deep mid-wicket, the next over backward square leg, the third one over wide long-off, then a swat over a deep point to a full toss, the fifth one a pull over square leg and finally a massive hit over wide long-on.

In the meantime, Yuvraj Singh smashed a half-century in 12 deliveries which seems to happen for the first time in a T20. It remained as the fastest half-century till date in the shortest format of the game.

The left-handed batter eventually finished on 58 (three 4s and seven 6s) in 16 balls as India amassed 218 for 4. England was restricted to 200/6 and were defeated by 18 runs. Moreover, India became World T20 champions when they defeated arch-rivals Pakistan in the finals on September 24 in Johannesburg.
