Meanwhile, Rohit’s ailment in the lead-up ensured the board had their job in naming a successor. On 18th December, a BCCI source close to the situation revealed that Rahul will take on the position.

“Yes, with Rohit missing, KL Rahul would be the vice-captain,” the source said. The BCCI informed that Rohit Sharma will miss the three-match Test series versus South Africa owing to a hamstring injury.

Priyank Panchal will replace Rohit Sharma in the Test squad,” it added.

Panchal, a Gujarat batsman with over 7000 runs at 45.52 and 24 hundred and 25 half-centuries in 100 First-Class matches, was a component of the A-side that performed 3 unofficial Tests in Bloemfontein. He dropped 4 runs short of a hundred in the first Test but recovered with scores of 24 and 0 in the 2nd before resting out the 3rd.

India will indeed be without all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, starter Shubman Gill, and spin bowler Axar Patel, who are all out due to injury. Other squad members had all arrived in Johannesburg on 16th December.

The very 1st Test will be held in Centurion from December 26 to 30, backed by the 2nd in Johannesburg between January 3-7 and the 3rd and final in Cape Town between January 11 to 15. The upcoming ODI series, which would not be a component of the ICC ODI WC Super League and will be contested as a separate bilateral tournament, will begin on January 19 in Paarl and will be followed by the 2nd ODI on 21st January in Cape Town well before the last one on 23rd January in Cape Town.
