Kapil Dev Explains Why Kuldeep And Chahal Shouldn’t Play Together

Kapil Dev, the legendary skipper has opened the debate regarding Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, and he also gave the reason why Kuldeep and Chahal both should not play together as spinners anymore. 34 ODI has been played by this duo and together at an average of 22.73, they have scalped 65 wickets. Since their ICC World Cup 2019 against England, the group stage clashed, India hasn’t played them together despite these good numbers.

Even during T20Is, they scalped 22 wickets in 10 matches and hold a good record. Nonetheless, since July 2018 Kuldeep and Chahal haven’t displayed together in the shortest format in an India XI. Now Kapil has spoken on the issue and gave his opinion that when two spinners play together the team remains weak in the batting. And that is the reason that usually India face and decide to replace all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in place of either Chahal or Kuldeep.

Kapil Dev on why Kuldeep and Chahal Should not Play Together

” The fielding and batting of Jadeja are so good that in case he failed with the bowling it remains unnoticed. That’s where, as compared to other spinners, he scores better,” Kapil said when it was questioned that why Kuldeep Yadav and Chahal should not play together.

He also added that “If two specialist spinners play together then the batting suffers a little. And batting of India shouldn’t be a problem but when it is required Jadeja can do the job with the bat and he has been a terrific late performer.”

In India’s ongoing tour of New Zealand, Kuldeep has featured in just one match. From the five-match T20I series after missing out entirely, in Hamilton’s playing XI squad of first ODI, Kuldeep got a chance. However, as per plan things didn’t go. In his 10 overs, he gave 84 runs and then he was dropped from the team for the next two matches.

On the other hand, we have Yuzvendra Chahal, who had more chances to play in New Zealand. He played in the final two ODIs of the three-match series as well as in all five T20Is. It was hoped that he will perform his best but he wasn’t up to the mark. And in the T20I series, he was able to take only three wickets against Kiwis and he had taken the runs at an economy rate of 8.35.
