‘I’m Ready For Red Ball’, Maxwell Optimistic On Making Test Comeback

Glenn Maxwell, 33, has not lost any hope of continuing to play Test cricket for Australia. The experienced made his first appearance in the long format in 2013, but only featured 7 matches since then. Despite his impressive portfolio, the right-handed hitter has only avg. 26.07.

Maxwell hasn’t sported the whites after Australia’s tour of Bangladesh in 2017. The batsman struggled on the tour and is yet to return to the Australian Test squad.

Maxwell, on the other hand, appeared hopeful of regaining his place in the Test squad after making technical improvements to his batting. “It’s definitely realistic. I think I am probably playing as well as ever have at the moment. I feel really good about my game. I have been able to work on different techniques for different formats, which has really helped going forward”.

“I have been in constant contact with selectors and they have been really clear about if opportunities do pop up then I am ready for red ball,” Maxwell.

The Australians have a busy calendar for next year. The Australians will go to Pakistan in March-April and then head to Sri Lanka in June-July. Following that, Australia is supposed to play a one-off Test versus Afghanistan, followed by 4 Tests versus India.

“There is a lot of cricket next year, you don’t want to burn guys out through the season so there could be a host of changes. So, I have to make sure I am playing well when they pick those squads in any format,” he added.

Maxwell has featured all of his Test matches on the subcontinent and has a strong record in first-class cricket. Maxwell struck a wonderful century versus India at Ranchi in March 2017. Except that, he has not yet scored above 50 in Test cricket.

Maxwell is not a member of Australia’s team for the Ashes, which begin on December 8 at The Gabba in Brisbane. Nonetheless, he remains one of Australia’s most valuable assets in limited-overs cricket.
