India are up against England in their 1st of the three-match ODI at Pune. England won the toss and chose to bowl first. The Virat Kohli-led side handed a total of 318 runs for the visitors to chase. Opener Shikhar Dhawan amassed a score of 98 runs but was unlucky to fall two short of his, who could have been a brilliant, century. India handed Krunal Pandya and Prasidh Krishna their maiden ODI cap.
IND vs ENG: Michael Vaughan wanted to see more of Surya
29-year-old Krunal Pandya scored a blistering 62* on his debut and also became the player to score the fastest half-century on his ODI debut. Prashid Krishna will be eyeing to impress everyone on his debut as well. However, former English player Michael Vaughan was shocked to see Surya Kumar Yadav missing from India’s playing XI against England.
Surya Kumar Yadav propelled brilliantly in his T20I debut whenever he was handed the chance to bat. The Mumbai Indians star started his international career with a 31-ball 51 which was later followed by a quick 32 runs off 17 balls. Michael Vaughan, in his interview with Cricbuzz, opined that Virat Kohli must have backed Surya in the ODI as well, as it would have boosted his confidence to an extent.
“India is still powerful. But I am surprised by the team selection. Rishabh Pant has played pretty much non-stop for a long period of time. So, maybe they gave him a bit of a breather, it’s not a bad thing for him. Suryakumar Yadav is who I would have played,” Vaughan said.
“On the back of his tremendous T20I performances, I would have gone with the ride and played him again. I think it’s so important that when a player comes in and sets the lights as he did, you carry on with him. I think he’s such a good player, he can easily adapt to the 50-over game. So, I am surprised India has gone without Suryakumar, but it is still a powerful line-up,” he added.
