Dinesh Karthik, famously known as Krishna Kumar Dinesh Karthik (born on 1 June 1985 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu) is an Indian right-hand wicketkeeper batter. Karthik has been a member of the Indian squad for a long time but he never managed to cement his place in the team. At the beginning of his career, he only managed to play the matches as a reserve of MS Dhoni as he was the regular first-choice wicketkeeper as well as captain of the Indian team. Dinesh Karthik has been a part of 6 teams in the Indian Premier League and has also captained Kolkata Knight Riders for 2 seasons. He was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the mega auction of TATA IPL 2022.

Karthik started playing cricket at an early age of 10 years. In did his early schooling in Kuwait where his father used to work. However, he returned to India and Karthik started of his schooling in Chennai. His father used to train him in his early days. It was Karthik’s father dream to see him play for the national side. Initially he started off playing as a batter but then added wicketkeeping skills. After playing good cricket in his schooling days, he was selected in Under-14 team of Tamil Nadu and then got picked up in Under-19 in 2000-01.

Dinesh Karthik Domestic Career

In 2002, Dinesh Karthik made his first-class debut playing for Tamil Nadu against Baroda. He played 5 matches in the season and scored 179 runs with the highest score of 88. He also took 11 catches.

He was picked up for the South Zone in Duleep trophy where he scored 180 runs in three matches with 3 fifties. He got dropped from the state team after some average performances.

He was recalled in Ranji season 2003-04 where he grabbed the opportunity with both hands and scored 438 runs with 2 centuries including his maiden first-class century against Railways. He also took 20 catches.

On the basis of these knocks, he got selected in Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2004 where he scored 2 half centuries.

In season 2008-09, Dinesh Karthik scored 1026 runs including 5 centuries and 2 half centuries.

In 2009-10, he smashed 443 runs in 6 matches including 2 centuries.

In 2018-19 Deodhar Trophy, Dinesh Karthik captained India A and then he captained Tamil Nadu in Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy and helped them win the tournament for the second time in the history. He scored 183 runs in the tournament and was named as the captain of Team of the tournament.

Dinesh Karthik International Career

After giving some decent performances in the domestic circuit, Dinesh Karthik got picked up in the Indian ODI squad for NatWest series. Dinesh Karthik made his international Debut on 5 September 2004 against England. He played a single match in 2004 ICC Champions Trophy before getting replaced by MS Dhoni. In the same year, he made his test debut against Australia but scored only 14 runs in the match. However, his wicketkeeping skills helped India during the match.

He regularly got opportunities in Test cricket but he failed to deliver with his average performances.

In 2005, he scored 93 runs against Pakistan and helped India in securing a marginal lead against them. After that he was replaced by MS Dhoni in all formats.

He made a comeback in tests in 2007 and scored 63 runs against South Africa. However, he failed to score big in the ODI series against the same opponent.

Later in 2007, he was selected in 2007 ICC World Cup but he didn’t scored much with the bat and that resulted in dropping out of the contention of T20 World Cup in the same year.

After the World Cup, he was selected as an opener for the series against Bangladesh where he scored his maiden century. During the tour of England, he returned as the highest run getter for India in the tests.

He was recalled in the Indian team for ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 after good Domestic season and scored centuries in 2 warm up matches.

Later, he played some matches for India mostly as a replacement of MS Dhoni but failed to capitalize the opportunity.

In 2018, he helped India in the finals of Nidahas Trophy by scoring 29 runs off just 8 balls.

On 6 July, 2019 he played 150th international match for the national side.

Dinesh Karthik IPL Career

Dinesh Karthik made his IPL debut for Delhi Daredevils in the 2008. He was with Delhi in first three seasons.

In 2009, he scored 288 runs in 15 matches and took 17 catches.

In 2011, he was bought by Kings XI Punjab but failed to perform for the franchise.

In 2012, he was roped in by Mumbai Indians and was a part of the squad that won 2013 IPL Trophy.

He was picked up by Delhi Daredevils in 2014, then by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2015 and Gujarat Lions in 2016 and 2017.

In 2018, he was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders and was appointed as the captain of the franchise. He led his team in the playoffs in 2018. In 2020, he was dropped from the team and captaincy was also given to Eoin Morgan in the mid-season.

In TATA IPL 2022, he was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whopping amount of 5.50 crores.
