“83”: The Movie Which Take You Back To The Era Of 1983 World Cup

Indian Cinema

Numerous movies release every year in India, with as many as 1600 films in various languages. Varieties of movies come and go, they are not persistent, but there are some movies that left a strong impression in the history of Indian cinema.

One such movie is going to release soon which will take the audience back to that era when for the first time, India won the Cricket World Cup in 1983.

“83”: Showing The World Cup Journey Of 1983

The “83” movie is an upcoming sports drama film which is directed by Kabir Khan. It will show the journey of the Indian cricketers who took part in the 1983 World Cup and led India to win the title for the first time.

Various well-known stars of the Bollywood industry are casting in the film, but the main leads in the film are Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. Ranveer Singh will play the role of Kapil Dev and Deepika Padukone will be seen as his wife.

Some other important actors are also casting in the movie who will play the key role of the cricketers of the 1983 squad.

Taking Back To The 1983 World Cup Era

The final match of the 1983 World Cup took place on June 25 in which the Indian national team created history by winning the World Cup for the first time under the captaincy of Kapil Dev. In that match, India lost the toss and invited to bat first by West Indies.

In the Indian innings, Krishnamachari Srikkanth put up significant resistance against the opponent bowlers. He made 38 runs in 82 balls while the second-highest score was made by Mohinder Amarnath as he scored 26 off 80. Skipper Kapil Dev managed to score only 15 off 10 balls.

The rest of the batsmen failed to show any significant performance in the match. Thus India made a total score of 183 before getting bowled out completely.

However, the Indian bowlers used the pitch conditions perfectly and bowled-out the best batting line-up of the opponent for 140 in 52 overs and win by 43 runs.

Revealing The Humorous Moments

The movie is going to release on the 10th of April. The cast of the “83” launched the poster of the film with Kamal Haasan and Kapil Dev in Chennai on Saturday.

In the poster-launch event, the former skipper Kapil Dev took back to the time when Srikkanth met the former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi in the early 1980s.

Dev shared some funny moments of that meeting, he said that Srikkanth had a very peculiar habit of winking always. When Indira Gandhi was coming to meet the team, all the senior players teased Srikkanth and told him that Madam Indira Gandhi is coming to meet them and he was not allowed to wink at her.

Kapil Dev was the captain so he was taking the Indira Gandhi down the line-up and Srikkanth was standing next to Sunil Gavaskar. Dev said in a funny way that Gavaskar takes 30 seconds extra while interacting with anyone. So the Prime Minister was taking time while interacting with Gavaskar.

In the next, Kapil Dev introduced Srikkanth, and as soon as he introduced them, Srikkanth started winking left, right and center at her. After she left, they confronted him and said that he cannot wink like that at the Prime Minister to which Srikkanth replied humorously, ‘well, she started it first’.

Apart from the fun, Kapil Dev also added that the spirit, fun, and humorous character of Srikkanth helped the whole team to get over the bad times. Without him, the team would have gone bad. He is really a great character and released the tension of the team on the field as well as off the field.  At last, he gave a big thanks to all the team members of “83” for giving him and his teammates a chance to re-live that time again.
