The Asia Cup is a One Day International cricket tournament that takes place every two years among members of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). The event was first played in 1984 and it was granted Test status in 2006. The Asia Cup is currently one of the four major international one-day tournaments, alongside the Cricket World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy, andICC World Twenty20.
In 2016, the International Cricket Council (ICC) stated that the tournament will rotate every two years between ODI and T20 formats depending on the format of the future international competitions. The Asia Cup has now been completed in 14 different iterations.
The next edition of the tournament will take place in 2022 and it will be hosted by Sri Lanka (or Bangladeshas a backup host). It is expected to have 16 teams with 12 qualifying from within Asia and four qualifying from outside of Asia based on their performance at the previous edition.
With seven championships, India is the most successful team in the competition (six ODI and one T20). Sri Lanka, with five titles under its belt, has been the second-most successful team.
The firstAsia Cup was held in 1984 and was won by India. The fifth tournament, also held in Sri Lanka, saw India win their first title after beating Pakistan in both the semifinal and final stages. India won in 3 consecutive seasons in the years 1988, 1990/91, and 1995. In 2010, Inda again brought the title home. Coincidentally, Sri Lanka was a runner-up in all 4 seasons.
In 2016, when the First T20 format of the game was played, India again brought the title home for the 6th time. The latest win was when India played the match in UAE in 2018. The eagerly anticipated Asia Cup is returning after a lengthy absence of 4 years, and there is excitement all around.
