Steve Smith Eligible To Be Captain Again As Captaincy Ban Ends

Steve Smith Eligible For Captaincy Hereafter

Former Australian captain, Steve Smith‘s two-year leadership ban was over on Sunday. With the completion of the ban, he is now eligible to become a captain again.

Smith was removed from captaincy and banned from leading Australia for two years because of his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal that shook Australian cricket, which occurred in March 2018 against South Africa.

Smith can captain the Australian side if offered, but it is unknown when international cricket will start again with fears of coronavirus not diminishing yet.

Australia scheduled to finish its New Zealand tour this week, where they were supposed to play three T20 matches, and some of its players set to participate in IPL, which was about to start on March 29th.

But the coronavirus fears have caused chaos in the world of sports and brought the cricketing action to a standstill.

The occurrence of IPL this year is still in doubt after it postponed to begin on April 15th, and Australia tour of England and Bangladesh face the risk of cancellation in the wake of the corona pandemic.

Smith speaking to a media outlet in his country said that he is trying to stay mentally and physically fit by training at his home gym and going on 10 kilometers (6 miles) runs and practicing the guitar.

Smith, about the chances of IPL happening, said,” “It’s not looking likely (the IPL will go ahead) at the moment,” Smith said. “I think there might be some meetings over the next few days to discuss what the go is with it all.

Warner Under Life Time Ban Of Captaincy

He added, “I’m just trying to stay physically and mentally fit and fresh and, if it goes ahead at some point, then great. And if not, plenty is going on in the world at the moment. So just play it day by day.”

Smith and David Warner received one-year bans from international, and most domestic cricket and Bancroft banned for nine months over the scandal, and Warner has banned for life from captaincy.
