There isn’t an immediate threat to Rohit Sharma’s ODI and Test captaincy because the BCCI hierarchy hasn’t seen anything wrong with his performance in both forms. The team’s captain Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid were present during the Mumbai review meeting. The BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, presided over the meeting.
Chetan Sharma, the chair of the previous selection committee, VVS Laxman, and president Roger Binny were also present during the review meeting.
Hardik Pandya, the new T20 captain, was not present in the meeting because it was focused on the World Test Championships (WTC), where India has a decent chance of reaching the finals, and the 2023 ODI World Cup.
The T20 international series against Sri Lanka begins on Tuesday, and Hardik is in Mumbai for it.
“Rohit is leading India in Tests and ODIs and there was no such discussions about his future as leader in these two formats. Look at his captaincy record in Tests and ODIs and it is more than impressive,” a BCCI source privy to the development told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
Hardik Pandya is the next T20I captain of India
The Indian cricket squad will soon see yet another major shift as Hardik Pandya is anticipated to take over as captain of the ODI and T20I teams.
Soon after the disastrous T20 World Cup match, some rumors catched fire that Hardik Pandya may replace Rohit Sharma since Rohit’s fitness consistently called into question for the previous 12 months. Rohit has missed multiple games due to fitness difficulties in addition to not participating in the current Test series against Bangladesh.
Contrarily, Hardik has been a consistent player who solely uses white balls since his return to international cricket in June.
Pandya demonstrated his managerial abilities earlier this year when he guided the Gujarat Titans to the IPL title, and he is presently in the lead for the T20I captaincy. He might soon receive the complete authority over the white-ball teams, it seems. Regarding his availability to play in all formats, the BCCI is awaiting news from Pandya.
Rohit Sharma’s performance as India captain
Rohit, on the other hand, who took over as T20I captain to start the home series against New Zealand following the 2021 T20 World Cup, succeeded Virat Kohli as the ODI captain in December 2021.
However, Rohit was unable to lead the Men in Blue during his debut ODI series since an injury prevented him from travelling to South Africa. He also skipped the Test series.
Rohit the missed the postponed last test of India’s test series against England from the previous year, which India lost.
He played in a T20I series, missed the West Indies ODIs, skipper the Zimbabwe tour in order to get ready for the Asia Cup and the T20 World 2022.
But unfortunately India failed to win both the cups under his leadership.
However, Rohit Sharma’s role as ODI and Test captain is currently secure as the BCCI hierarchy has not found anything unacceptable about his performance in those formats.
