It has taken a long time for the script of women’s cricket to come to the limelight and see bright days. Although international cricket for Indian women started way back in the 70s, there wasn’t much awareness about it. Gradually with on and off schedule, the women started participating in international competitions. There were few testing and brilliant performances by the women of India for which Shanta Rangaswamy, Diana Edulji, Shubhangi Kulkarni, and Sandhya Agarwal were also awarded with Arjuna award in 1976. India played their first ODI in 1978, the same year they played their first World Cup. They lost all the matches.
Since then the team has come a long way. India women have been in the finals of the World cup for two times now. In the previous edition World cup which was held in 2017, India finished as runners-up and brought immense glory to the nation, and helped the women vertical of the game to get more attention from the large army of viewers in India. We have in our team the highest run-getter, Mithali Raj, and the 2nd highest wicket-taker of the whole world Jhulan Goswami who is on her way to being number. The very young and talented Smrithi Mandhana has won the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year award two times now.
Women in blue are currently participating in the 10th World Cup and the team looks super impressive. With the very experienced Mithali Raj leading the side, the Chakda Express Jhulan Goswami leading the bowling attack, Harmanpreet Kaur as vice-captain, and the skillful Smrithi Mandhana with her poetic talent, the team has given a lot of hope to the cricket fanatics of the nation.
In their first match versus rival Pakistan, Team India completely outplayed their opponent and won the match with a massive margin of 107 runs and continued their winning streak against the neighboring country in the World cups. The women in blue will take on Newzealand in their home on 10th March in one of the most anticipated games of the tournament.
After an extensive-struggling past, the team is finally getting the traction they should have gotten long ago. There is a much distance to cover but we can take a small moment to celebrate the women who have given so much to reach here and are now representing our nation at the highest level, filled with zeal and passion to win the tournament and make the country proud.
