Jason Roy and Sam Billings have returned to England’s 15-man squad for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, starting on Thursday, November 17.
Apart from them, James Vince also been recalled for the series which is being played right after the ongoing T20 World Cup.
Following a string of poor performances at the international and domestic levels, opening batsman Roy was dropped from the England team that is currently competing in the T20 World Cup in Australia.
He was also removed from the list of centrally contracted players due to same reason.
The 32-year-old was a key component of England’s white-ball teams in the past. He was a part of the team that defeated New Zealand at Lord’s to win the 2019 50-over World Cup.
Vince and Billings
Since July 2021, neither Vince nor Billings have participated in an ODI, but both have excelled in recent 50-over chances.
Vince in his last ODI innings smashed a hundred to seal a clean sweep of Pakistan. While Billings, who has played eight ODI innings since 2020 averaging 56.00, has been unlucky not to have recently been selected.
Ten of the fifteen players selected for this series are already in Australia. They are currently there as members of the T20 World Cup team.
Interesting additions to the lineup include Chris Jordan and Olly Stone. Stone last participated in an ODI in October 2018. While Jordan, who was largely regarded as a T20 specialist, hasn’t played in the format in more than two years.
Jason Roy as an opener
Since Jonny Bairstow is not there due to injury. And England’s white-ball skipper Jos Buttler bats lower in ODIs, Roy might now open opposite Phil Salt. The match series against Australia that begins in Adelaide on November 17, just four days after the T20 World Cup final is slated to begin.
Sam Billings, James Vince, and Olly Stone have also been called up to the national team. While, Luke Wood, who has never played for England in an ODI, has been included to the team.
Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Mark Wood, and the star all-rounder Ben Stokes are also absent from the list. The group is scheduled to travel in Abu Dhabi on November 18. The day following the first ODI, to begin getting ready for the Pakistan Test tour.
Alex Hales, who has just returned from a three-and-a-half year international break, is another member of the World Cup team who will not be participating.
The opening one-day international will take place in Adelaide. Then both teams will travel to Sydney on November 19 before wrapping off in Melbourne on November 22.
