Abdur Razzak is all set to work as a coach: A member of Bangladesh’s selection panel will work as a spin consultant for the High-Performance Unit during their forthcoming camp, which begins on May 14. After retiring from all forms of cricket on June 27, last year, the veteran left-arm spinner joined the national selection panel, but this will be his first term as a coach.
“Sure, if all goes according to plan, I’ll probably join the HP camp.” It’s not that I’m abandoning my teaching career for the time being, but I believe I have a wealth of experience that I can share with the younger lads, and if they benefit from it, it will be really fulfilling. “I believe it would be an exciting experience for me as well,” Razzak was quoted as saying to Cricbuzz.
After failing to find an overseas coach during their quest, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Excessive Efficiency Unit Chairman Naimur Rahman was overjoyed to have Razzak on board. The Bangladesh Cricket Board’s High-Performance Unit head, Naimur Rahman, informed Cricbuzz that they had sought Razzak since they are currently unable to get the services of any international spin expert.
“We have yet to find a strong spin coach or consultant for our High-Performance Unit, therefore we are considering including Razzak in the HP camp since we know he can share his knowledge with our youngsters,” Naimur explained. In addition to that, according to Cricbuzz, Toby Radford, the head coach of the HP Unit, is due to arrive in Dhaka on June 1 and will be in charge of the batsmen’s development, while Champaka Ramanayke will be in charge of the fast bowling unit.
Abdur is the first Bangladeshi bowler to reach 200 ODI wickets. He is also the first left-arm spinner to capture a hat-trick, following Saqlain Mushtaq. In the 2001-2002 season, he made his first-class debut for the Khulna Division of Bangladesh. He is well renowned for being a tall left-arm orthodox spin bowler who, in his first season, helped his division win the National Cricket Title.
Following that, he was named for Bangladesh A (a training squad for the entire national squad), where he performed admirably against Zimbabwe A, including a 7 for 17 performance in Dhaka. He has only played nine Tests, but he has been more successful in One Day Internationals (ODIs), where he was Bangladesh’s best wicket-taker in 2013 when he achieved the 200-wicket mark. He became the first Bangladeshi player to take 500 first-class wickets in January 2018.
